# mark_notifications

> Mark personal notifications with Mill MCP.

Mark selected notifications or all notifications present at the request snapshot as read/unread. Repeated read marks preserve the first read time. Choose ids OR all:true.

## Workflow

```mermaid theme={"system"}
flowchart LR
  step0["Choose IDs or all"] --> step1
  step1["Set read state"] --> step2
  step2["Preserve later arrivals"]
```

## Access and behavior

Write or Administrator OAuth consent and a member/administrator team role are required. Tools are listed and callable only when the current grant and role permit them.

Choose ids or all:true, never both. read defaults to true; false marks unread. All applies to the request snapshot, leaving later arrivals unread. Repeated read marks preserve the original receipt time. Team API keys cannot mutate personal notifications.

## Arguments

| Argument | Required | Type or meaning |
| - | - | - |
| `ids` | No | array |
| `all` | No | boolean |
| `read` | No | boolean |
| `idempotencyKey` | No | One logical mutation key, reused unchanged on retries. MCP forwards it as the REST Idempotency-Key header. |

## Example call

The client initializes the MCP connection before sending this JSON-RPC call. Example records are fictional.

```json theme={"system"}
{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 1,
  "method": "tools/call",
  "params": {
    "name": "mark_notifications",
    "arguments": {
      "ids": ["77777777-7777-4777-8777-777777777777"],
      "read": true,
      "idempotencyKey": "notification-read-001"
    }
  }
}
```

## Example result

Mill returns this object in `structuredContent` and normally a JSON text content block (large responses may shorten the text block). A tool failure sets `isError`; never treat an error as a completed mutation.

```json theme={"system"}
{
  "ok": true,
  "updated": 1
}
```
